With injuries to key personnel mounting after Friday night’s battling draw in Galway, Shiels is hoping the three week break will rejuvenate his playing staff.

Top goalscorer, Rory Patterson and Austrian midfielder, Lucas Schubert were the latest to join the injured ranks after picking up hamstring strains.

While it was too early to assess the extent of those injuries, Shiels said he won’t be forced into the transfer market to strengthen his squad.

The Derry boss insists he will continue to develop the club’s emerging young talent as they continue to battle on three fronts when the season resumes on June 24th at home to Wexford Youths.

Reflecting back on the first half of the campaign, the Co. Derry man said he was pleased with the progress.

“We’re sitting in third place and we’re still in both the cups so I think it’s pretty good at the minute,” he said.

“We’re taking six days off and then we’re back in again as normal to prepare for the friendly against Glenavon. That gives us a full week after that to prepare for the Wexford game.

“When you consider the injuries, the break has come at a good time,” added Shiels.

“There’s nothing happening in terms of bringing new players in. Yes, we’re in the middle of some injury problems but we have some young boys who will come through and get some development time.”

Derry City Lotto numbers on June 6th were as follows: 2, 18, 23, 24. First prize is £1,600.
