UNDONE by two preventable strikes at Inchicore on Tuesday night, Peter Hutton has predictably opted to take the positives from the game.

And while the Derry boss felt his side had suffered a double whammy after conceding a Greg Bolger strike from near the half-way line, losing the services of keeper, Gerard Doherty, in the same incident, he praised his players for their commitment.

Doherty, while back-peddling in an attempt to claim Bolger’s hopeful lofted effort from over 40 yards, injured his neck and shoulder when colliding with the steel bar which keeps the back of the net taut.

Young keeper, Shaun Patton, entered the fray to make his senior debut and while he was never seriously tested, he was at fault for the St. Pat’s second goal during the final five minutes when failing to cut out a cross into his danger area.

“Naturally I’m disappointed to have lost the game as I felt we played really well for long periods but we lacked that important guile in the final third.

“At times our decision making had been poor but, it was the lack of a cutting edge which cost us dearly.”

With clear-cut scoring chances at a premium throughout the game, Hutton felt his side would have prevented both goals on another night.

“We’ve opted to take the positives but we were always in the game. We were not overawed but we did run out of ideas at times,” added Hutton.

With Anthony Elding deployed as a lone front man, Hutton was happy that the striker had “put himself about” and gave the St. Pat’s defence something to think bout.

“Anthony did well but we had to take him off with 15 minutes remaining, giving Cillian Morrison a chance to get more game-time under his belt.”
