RODDY COLLINS swooped to secure the signature of last year’s leading goalscorer, Rory Patterson last night and insists the Strabane man will form part of a ‘prolific’ strikeforce at Derry City next season.
The Derry City boss has wasted no time in getting Patterson back on board and after brief talks at the Brandywell office yesterday, Collins was delighted to get his man!
Patterson (29) yesterday returned home from a long haul flight from Egypt where he was holidaying and Collins immediately began engaging in talks with the striker once he arrived back on Foyleside.
The former N. Ireland striker, who netted 24 goals in all competitions last season, was out of contract following the final game of the season against Limerick last month.
With Michael Rafter on the verge of joining Cork City last night, a striker was the main priority for Collins.
And with Patterson now on the Derry City books for another year, Collins is determined to add another ‘prolific’ frontman who he believes will excite the Brandywell support.
“Rory’s signed today,” confirmed the Derry City boss. “There was no problems whatsoever and there’s no questioning his commitment. There wasn’t even a hesitation, he just wanted to sign. So it’s brilliant. I wanted that done and dusted as soon as possible.
“It’s a one year deal so I’m delighted,” he enthused. “I couldn’t get in touch with him because he just got back this morning so it was something I wanted nailed down straight away.
“He’s a prolific goalscorer with a reputation for wanting to be a winner. I like winners and he’s a winner. I’ve no doubt about that.
“And he’s not a man who is afraid to express his own opinion and that’s something I really look for in a player.
“It’s a no-brainer and the kid I’m bringing in beside him is also a strong character and equally opinionated and it’s brilliant.”
