Foyle Harps receive IFA Community awards from Pat Jennings

DERRY COACH, Leroy McCourt and members of Foyle Harps Youth Football Club received a surprise visit this week from N. Ireland goalkeeping legend, Pat Jennings who presented the local coach with the McDonald's Irish FA Regional Coach of the Year award.

McDonald’s Head of N. Ireland Football, Jennings has been visiting towns and cities across the North to present Irish FA Regional Community Awards to local grassroots footballing heroes for the great work they do in supporting their local clubs.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal player was joined by Glenavon and N. Ireland winger, Paddy McCourt to present Leroy with the prestigious award.

The club was also awarded the Regional Accredited ‘Club of the Year Award’ in recognition of the club’s success in encouraging a number of new young people to take up the beautiful game.

Paying tribute to the work done by the Regional Community Award winners, Pat Jennings said: “I love the opportunity each year to travel throughout N. Ireland to present Regional Community Awards to hardworking, committed and passionate local grassroots heroes who do so much for local communities,” said the former goalkeeper.

“The McDonald’s Irish FA Community Awards is our way of saying thank you to the coaches, clubs and volunteers who give up their time to help young footballers across N. Ireland to shine.

“I look forward to catching up with Leroy and all the other Regional Community Award winners at the Belfast City Hall event in November.”

Foyle Harps coach, Leroy McCourt said he was ‘privileged’ to pick up a regional award: “I feel privileged to be presented with this award from Pat, Paddy and McDonald’s franchisee, David Walker,” he said.

“I look forward to meeting Pat again in November at the McDonald’s Irish FA National Community Awards in Belfast City Hall and hopefully I might have a chance of picking up the National Award too!”

The awards programme, now in its sixth year, honours grassroots clubs and the volunteers who give up countless hours to ensure that football takes place every week throughout N. Ireland.

The awards have six categories including The Respect Award, Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year and the coveted The People’s Award (for Lifetime achievement in Football) which celebrates an individual’s outstanding contribution to grassroots football.
