Derry man Darron Gibson has been forced to pull out of the Republic of Ireland squad due to face the Czech Republic next week after he sustained a knee injury.

The 24 year-old midfielder was expected to join Everton team-mate and fellow Derry man Shane Duffy in Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni’s 26 man squad but his withdrawal was announced via the Everton website earlier this week.

The true extent of Gibson’s injury is not yet known but it is believed he could be unavailable for four weeks.

Since joining Everton from Manchester United last month, Gibson has played seven games and scored once, the winning goal in a game against his former club’s great rivals Manchester City.
