THE McAlinden Cup first round clash between Park Bar and holders, Trojans certainly lived up to its pre-match expectations on Sunday with the game decided in extra-time.
Darren McCready netted in the first period of extra-time after the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and that goal was enough to see Premier Division leaders, Park Bar progress to the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere in the competition, Terry Kelly Memorial Cup champions, Top of the Hill Celtic defeated Tristar 3-1 to reach the semi-final stages and keep alive their chances of a cup ‘double’.
Colm Logue’s Celtic side are more or less ruled out of the title race this season, therefore they will be expected to make a huge push for the Blue Riband title. They were knocked out of the competition at the quarter-final stages last season so they will be delighted to have progressed to the last four.
And in the league campaign, Lisahally defeated Oxford 5-2 to ensure back-to-back victories.
Results - McAlinden Cup first round: Park Bar 2, Trojans 1 (After extra-time); McAlinden Cup quarter-finals: Top of the Hill Celtic 3, Tristar 1; Premier Division: Lisahally 5, Oxford 2.
McAlinden Cup quarter-final draw - Culmore v Park Bar; Phoenix v Lisahally; Brandywell Harps v Don Bosco’s.
