The first quarter-final in the Pat Harkin Summer Cup will be staged tonight (Tuesday) when Brandywell Harps take on new favourites, Telstar Colts at 7.00 p.m.
And adding spice to this fixture is the fact that Harps defeated Telstar at the semi-final stage last season.
Harps have opted to field a very youthful side this season with a number of experienced personnel such as Stephen Johnston, Stephen Melly, James Melly and Sean McCabe included.
In their opening game Telstar overcame a strong Lisahally side and with former senior players such as Paddy McLaughlin, Darren McCready and Declan Divin in their ranks the former winners will be expected to progress.
Tomorrow night’s quarter-final will see current holders, Derry City Academy, face Oxford United Stars in what’s expected to be close game.
Derry, under the guidance of John Quigg defeated Tristar 2-1 but this year’s team is much younger than that which claimed the trophy last year.
Having progressed to this stage after defeating Finn Harps on penalties, Oxford United Stars will start the game as clear-cut favourites given their experience in the Northern Ireland Intermediate League.
Next week’s quarter-finals are as follows - Monday, May 27th, Top of the Hill Celtic or Trojans v. Abercorn; Tuesday, May 28th, Ardmore v. Strabane.
The first of the 2013 semi-finals is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, May 30th.
