In Pictures: When John Hume brought Ronaldinho and star-studded Barcelona to Derry City

JOHN Hume will forever be fondly remembered for his contribution to Derry City Football Club who he served as honorary president for 21 years since 1999.

As the Nobel Peace Prize winner is laid to rest today, we take a look back on the magical day he brought Barcelona's star-studded side to Foyleside in August 2003.

With Derry facing into a perilous financial situation, the sold-out pre-season friendly where Brazilian superstar, Ronaldinho made his debut for the Catalan giants in a 5-0 win, the funds from the match ultimately saved the club from serious difficulties as 10,000 people turned out for the spectacle.

Here's some memorable photographs from that momentous day in the history of Derry City Football Club thanks to the vision and passion of the late Mr Hume.
