THE IFA’s N. Ireland Schools Cup Finals day proved a memorable occasion for two Derry schools who were crowned N. Ireland champions in Ballymena Showgrounds today.
St Columb’s College’s Under-16 team lifted the N.I. Senior Cup after an emphatic 4-0 victory over Ballymena school, St Louis’.
Goals from Stephen Duffy, Dean Power, Darren Rush and Tiarnan Canning ensured a comfortable victory for the Buncrana Road school.
And Creggan representatives, St Joseph’s won the Under-12 Minor Cup final with a 4-2 victory over St Columb’s College in an all-Derry affair.
It was St Columb’s who opened the scoring in this one through Cahir McMonagle scored after just 30 seconds. However, St Joe’s fought back with goals from Caolan McLaughlin, Aidan Griffin to turn things around for the Creggan boys at the interval.
McMonagle got St Columb’s back on level terms with his second after the break but St Joe’s almost immediately got back in front from the penalty spot as Steven Burke found the net after Caolan McLaughlin was fouled inside the area.
St Joe’s then ensured victory when catching their Derry counterparts on the counter attack as McLaughlin applied the finish to Griffin’s cross to end the game as a contest.
Meanwhile Thornhill College lost out to Holy Cross in the Senior Girls decider by 4-1.
A hat-trick U17 N.Ireland international, Chelsea Sheerin and a Kat McGillen strike sent the Holy Cross girls on their way to victory, despite a goal from Hannah Ward.
