Ireland's Keane signs up for City of Derry Triathlon
Most people can only dream about competing against an Olympic triathlete, but for this year's firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon participants, it will be a reality.
North West Triathlon Club has revealed that Team Ireland triathlete, Bryan Keane, who has qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games, will compete at the prestigious event on Sunday, June 19th.
The 35 year-old Corkman plans to use this race as part of his training build up to the Olympic Games in Rio this August.
Following a bad car accident that ruled him out of the London 2012 Games, Bryan has undertaken extensive preparation to ensure he is in peak condition for this year’s sporting spectacular.
Commenting on why he chose to compete in the prestigious firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, Bryan explained: “This event is a great training opportunity for me and, although I’ve never taken part in this challenge before, I’ve heard all about it from fellow Olympian Aileen Reid who won the ladies race in 2014. She advised me that if I ever got a chance to take part, I should as it was one of the best races and courses in Ireland and with such a recommendation, I was determined to take on the challenge at the first opportunity!
“Being away from home for nine months and competing all over the world, I’m delighted to get a race on home soil in 2016 and it’s something I’m really looking forward to. Some years it hasn’t been possible to race at home and what makes it all the sweeter is that I’ve my place booked at the Rio Olympics and it’s fantastic to be able to share this with the triathlon community ahead of the games”
Angeline Murphy of firmus energy, said: “We are delighted to hear the news that Bryan is taking part in our event and it is testament to the high standard of the race. I hope that he enjoys the Triathlon and we look forward to seeing his time, which could set a new course record.
“You never know, participating in the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon could just give him the edge at Rio - let’s hope so!”
The closing date for entries is tomorrow (Friday). For more information visit www.firmusenergyderrycitytriathlon.com.
