THE 25th year of the City of Derry Open Mixed Foursomes Championships will conclude this Sunday at Prehen.
And the name of a new pairing will appear on the famous old trophy this weekend.
The 2013 final will be contested by the husband and wife pairing of Cheryl and John Chambers and the formidable partnership of Ciara Quigg and Ernie Heywood.
The former pair ended the challenge of Kathleen Hutton and Andy Meenagh on a 2&1 verdict, the winners having birdied the 16th and 17th holes to close out the match.
And in the second semi-final, which was played on Wednesday, Quigg and Ernie Heywood defeated the Foyle pairing of Cormac McGeady and Anne Hamilton also on a 2&1 scoreline, in tough conditions at Prehen.
As usual, this Sunday’s final will be preceded by the traditional Singles Stableford Plate Final.
The Mixed Foursomes Final will tee-off at 2.00 p.m.
Phonsie in command at Greencastle
Phonsie McCole (19) returned the best card of the day on Sunday at Greencastle with 43 points to claim the Paddy Hynes Cup.
A break of tie was called upon to decide the minor places with four scores of 39 points returned.
Easily the best back nine score of the day was that of David McDaid (21) with 24 points and this secured the runner up spot.
In third place was Nigel Davenport (8) while George Harley was the winner of the gross with 30 points
The ‘nines’ were claimed by Eoin Rankin (23 pts) and Hugh O’Donnell (21 pts).
This weekend starts with a Ladies & Gents singles tomorrow and the annual Captain’s outing to Castlerock is also scheduled.
The timesheet is full and a waiting list has been set up. Anyone who cannot make their time should let the club know and release the space to another member on the waiting list.
Condy on top at Buncrana
Condy Quinn returned to form at Buncrana last weekend, the 18 handicapper claiming the Derek Breslin Memorial Open Stableford competition following a three-way break of tie.
In fact, Condy got off to a very poor start carding just 16 points over the first nine holes, however, the fireworks arrived on the back nine when he added a superb 23 points.

This weekend’s competition is the Mr. Daniel Kearney’s Honorary Vice-President’s Open Stableford which is sponsored by Mr.Kearney.

The qualifying for the annual Christmas Hamper has now commenced and competitors can take out cards in conjunction with other competitions if they wish. The entry fee is E4 with a E2 re-entry and 21 points are required over the nine holes to qualify.
The Owen McDaid (Roe) Winter League will commence weekend of September 28th and 29th and with a new format this year it promises to be a very exciting competition. All details have been posted on the clubhouse noticeboard and names are now being taken.
Notes From Dunfanaghy
Last week’s Wednesday Open was won by Patrick McGowan with an impressive score of 42 points.
In Sunday’s stroke competition, Cornelius McMullin returned to winning ways with a great score of 63. Corney had a few to spare over Seamus Friel in second place with a score of 67. Fergus Walsh was in third place with a score of 68.
Open competitions dominate this weekend to coincide with the the Jazz & Blues Festival.
After this weekend the 14 hole competition will not be run on Fridays for the foreseeable future. However members are still encouraged to play in the winter four person team event and bring along members from other courses to participate.
The juvenile competition was cancelled on Saturday due to the weather conditions. There will be a competition on Saturday as normal.

Big Turnout at Strabane
With the inevitable abandonment of last Saturday’s Open, sponsored by Dixie’s Bar, due to the persistent heavy morning rain, the weekend’s focus fell on Sunday’s Owen Roes Ladies & Gents Singles competition for which the weather had thankfully relented.
Results were - 1, Eamon McGlinchey (12) 40 points; 2, break of tie, Declan Devine (12) 39; 3, Denis Porter (10) 39; 4, break of tie, Patrick McCrossan (5) 38; 5, Caolan Crawford (5) 38.
Enda Kennedy (-1) took the gross prize with a level par roundwhile the ‘nines’ were won by Paul McNally (14) with 21 pts and Brian Brolly (11) 21 pts. respectively.
