AS PART of the Amelia Earhart Festival and the City of Culture festivities, there will be a “Festival of Golf” at the Foyle Golf Centre over two weekends next month - Saturday, May 18th and Saturday and Sunday, May 25th and 26th.

The events organised will involved both elements of golf, events for the beginners and the more competitive players.

On Saturday, May 18th, the beginners will take centre stage with the Foyle club’s resident professionals, Sean Young and Derek Morrison, teaching the fundamentals of golf.

This event is for children, youths and young adults. However, the event is also open to the older generation who would like to come along and try the game of golf with instruction added in.

Club Stableford results - Sunday, April 22 - 1, Christy Coyle (8) 40 points; 2, Hugh Doherty (13) 39.

Foyle got their G.U.I. Inter Club competitions under way on Sunday last when hosting Belvoir Park in the first round of the Ulster Cup and the local side secured a healthy advantage when winning 5.5 to 1.5 with the return leg taking place tomorrow (Sat.) in Belfast.

The Ulster Fourball team also got their competition under way when hosting Gracehill in the first leg of the competition and they gained a 3.5 to 1.5 victory with the away leg to be played this Sunday.

The Qualifying Singles, sponsored by Brickkiln, runs until Sunday, April 28th (one card only with the top 64 qualifying for the matchplay stages).

Tie-Break Decides

at Redcastle

Redcastle’s hard-working Competitions Secretary, Seamus McGeehan, got one over on the club’s new Captain, Danny Carlin, when last weekend’s confined competitioin following a break of tie.

Both players returned scores of 41 points with Eamonn Haughey claiming third place with a fine score of 40. Kris McClelland took the gross prize while the “nines” were claimed by Martin Agnew (21 pts.) and George Dunlop (22 pts.) respectively.

Meanwhile, the Captain, President and membership of Redcastle extend their condolences to past Lady Captain, Una Smyth and her family circle following the recent death of her mother, Mrs. Peggy Doherty.

May she rest in peace.

The special “member and guest day” has been confirmed at Saturday, May 4th next. Introduce a friend to Ballyliffin and pay E5. Timesheet is now open. One guest per adult member, both ladies and gents. Competition fee on day is E5.

The club matchplay entries will close on Sunday, May 5th and entries are now being taken for Club Singles, Doubles, Mixed and Scratch (0-9) Matchplay.

The annual Master Chef Final will take place tonight (Friday) at 8.00 p.m. and in the final are Linda Toland, Lady Captain, Roisin Shirreffs and Paddy McDermott. Finally, in a bid to boost the funds of the club’s Youth Academy, Jim Porter, Gareth McCausland (PGA), Shaun Doherty and John Farren will play a 24 hours Golf Marathon in June.

Last Sunday’s Open Stableford was won by young Conor McGlynn who continued his fine run of form. Conor played some good golf over the 18 holes to return the top score of 40 points in very difficult conditions.

Full results were - Open Stableford - 1, Conor McGlynn (10) 40 points; 2, break of tie, Hugh Doherty C. (8) 39; gross, Damien Doherty (9) 75; 3, Jack Duffy (12) 39.

This weekend’s competition, to be played over tomorrow (Sat.) and Sunday, is the Declan Coughlan Memorial Open Stroke, which is sponsored by the Coughlan Family. A timesheet is in operation and bookings can be made by contacting the clubhouse on 0749362279.

A new “Find the Joker” fund-raising effort is up and running again with the jackpot already at E1,000. There will also be an opportunity to win two extra prizes of €100 if the joker is not found, lines cost E2 each.

Thursday Society

City of Derry Thursday Society final competition, The Ted Pope Trophy was won in emphatic fashion by Paul McIntyre with 43 points over the long Prehen Course last week.

This was Paul’s second major victory in the Society having already claimed the Harry Bryson Trophy earlier in the season. The new season will resume in October next with new Skipper, Martin McNulty,
