An ‘official’ statement of intent at Buncrana!

BUNCRANA Golf Club’s leading officials issued a statement of intent last weekend when showing the large field a clean pair of heels in the latest round of the Winter League campaign.

Captain, Kevin McDermott and President, Paul Eccles, proved that the pressure from their heavy office duties was having absolutely no affect on their golfing abilities.

Indeed, the pair combined effectively last Sunday morning when returning a sensational score of 50 points in the Winter League fourball betterball.

Predictably, that score was more than enough to secure the weekly prize for the popular pairing and it certainly sets them well on their way to qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

The Owen McDaid (Roe) Winter League will continue this weekend and the format will be greensomes.

There will be a break in the Winter League next weekend to facilitate the Aileen Hallinan Memorial Teams of 4 Open Scramble fund-raiser in aid of the Donegal Hospice and the organisers of this event would appreciate a good turnout for this worthy cause.

Meanwhile, the final of the pairs Matchplay Championship was played last weekend between the pairings of Damien Doherty & Paul McDaid and Craig Doherty & Shaun Devlin. The match was played in a very sporting manner and the standard of golf was excellent with Damien and Paul coming out on top by one hole.

Qualifying for the annual Christmas Hamper has now commenced and the entry fee is E4 with a E2 re-entry and it takes 21 points over nine holes to qualify.

The club will be holding a General Knowledge Quiz in the Cottage Bar tonight (Friday) at 8:30 p.m. in aid of the club’s development fund.

Dermot in fine form at Greencastle

Dermot McBride (15) is certainly taking full advantage of a good vein of form as he picked up another win on Saturday past with 42 points.

A steady front nine gave no indication of what was to come as he earned four points at each of the 10th and 11th holes and finished with two pars for a further six points, giving him a back nine of 24 points.

The runner up was Geoff Kincaid (19), from Redcastle following a break of tie victory over Denis Canavan (16), both players having returned 39 points.

The gross prize was won by Paul Wallace with 33 pts. and the winners of the ‘nines’ were Philip Devlin (21 pts.) and Ciaran McColgan (24 pts).

In the ladies section, it was a visitor from Co. Armagh, Vicky Ellingham (27), who collected the honours with 40 pts.

Playing partners Joe McCafferty (13) and John McDermott (17) battled each other all the way on Sunday for top finishes.

At the half-way mark, Joe had 23 points with John sitting on 20. Hole by hole the gap closed until they both sat on 38 points after 16.

But the momentum switched back in favour of Joe on the17th green where he birdied to go one point ahead.

And that proved the difference on the day as Joe won with 43 points with John a very close second on 42 points.

Tom Agnew (17) also returned a score of 42 points, but lost out on the back nine tie break.

Neil Guckian won the gross with 32 pts. and the ‘nines’ were won by Martin McGeoghegan (21 pts.) and Martin Harvey (21 pts. following a break of tie.)

This weekend the competitions include a Ladies and Gents Open Stableford tomorrow (Saturday) with a Singles Stableford on offer this Sunday.
