Bill McKinney “Semis” at Lifford

THE two semi finals of the annual Bill McKinney 575 yards competition will be the main races tomorrow night at Lifford Greyhound Stadium following last weekend’s four closely contested first round heats.

Indeed, selecting a outright winner at this stage of the competition is no easy task and making matters even more difficult comes the fact that the four first round heat winners have all been drawn together in the first semi final.

With that in mind, I think it’s fair to suggest that there will be ‘money in the right’ for all four winners. “Weebarney Girl,” in trap four recorded the best time in the heats when she showed good early pace to win in a time of 31.82. This May 08 bitch would be expected to lead this semi-final and she will be difficult to beat if she does break well. However, I think she is involved in a much stronger race and she may have trouble holding off the very well drawn “Altmore Prince” from trap one.

This blue dog won out of the trap one in a time of 31.96 last week and if he can get a good run around the opening bend he will outstay the field on the demanding run from the back straight to the winning line.

The second semi final is a real minefield with none of the six dogs winning in last week’s heats. “Sniper Joe Mucks,” from trap three looks as if he could lead this field as he did lead last week but he tired on the uphill finish to the line, so I believe “Nosey Posey” in trap four may be the one to be on in this semi final. If he can get a clear run at the expected leader, “Nosey Posey” looks to be an out and out stayer and is expected to improve a lot for last week’s run.

Also on tomorrow night’s card there will be four first round heats of the A4 525 yards event which boasts a prize fund of E2,200.

Meanwhile, on Sunday night Lifford will host a good 11 race card with the three first round heats of the A2 525 yards the main races of the night.

As normal racing tomorrow night starts at 7.50 p.m. with Sunday’s card starting at the earlier time of 6.00 p.m.

Bill McKinney 575 yards semi-finals - in trap order - first semi-final - 1, Altmore Prince, 2, Diane’s Basil, 3, Ballymacky Boy, 4,Weebarney Girl, 5, Murmillo, 6, Rough Gypsy.

Brandywell Spring Final

Meanwhile, at Brandywell next Monday night the final of the Easter Spring will headline the Derry card.

The two semi-finals of the event were run off last Monday night and after those races it will be difficult to oppose Paula Cullen’s “Nobody’s Listening.”

This August 09 pup was well supported before his race and he looked very impressive when he overcame a slow start to win by over eight lenghts in a very good time of 16.94. A well made 67 lbs. dog, he has a massive advantage on the clock and it will be the shock of the night if he does not win this final for his co Tyrone owners.

“Slaneyside Madge” looks the main danger if the red hot favourite under performs on the night. As normal, racing at Brandywell starts at 8.00 p.m.
