Buncrana Youngsters Crowned 2013 Donegal Youth Champions

BUNCRANA Golf Club’s focus on youth continues to reap handsome dividends with the Inishowen youngsters crowned Donegal Youth Matchplay Champions following a thrilling victory over Letterkenny recently.

And the lads from the “Lowers” recorded some superb victories on their way to the final having defeated both Donegal and last year’s winners Gweedore in the quarter-final and semi-final.

Letterkenny also had an impressive run in reaching the final for the first time. They defeated Ballyliffin in the quarter-final and Ballybofey & Stranorlar in thejr semi-final.

Buncrana drew first blood when holding a 2-1 lead after the 1st leg in Letterkenny and after that performance they were always going to be difficult to beat.

In the second leg Jack Patton and Christopher Duffy gave the Barnhill boys great hope with a one hole victory with birdies and pars the order of the day. However, Buncrana’s Jack Duffy and Craig Doherty sealed the tie when winning the second match and the home side went on to win the third match securing a 4-2 overall win.

The Buncrana pairing of Jack Duffy and Craig Doherty remained unbeaten over the summer and there also great performances from Tom Clare, Shane Doherty, Matthew Stainsby, Shane McClean, Ciaran Bradley and Caolan Mc Hugh.

Strabane Captain, Dr. Ciaran Kelly, led his Captain’s Outing to Portsalon with a total of 129 golfers making the trip and the Captain was in great form, putting his local course knowledge to great use when returning 43 pts. thanks to a superb level par back nine the joint best gross score of the day!

The Club Matchplay events drew to a close at the weekend with Michael Baldrick winning the Gallagher Memorial Cup with a close fought win over Brian Cairns which finished on the last green. Nicky Patton took the Jones Cup with a win over Freddie Patterson.

The Leo Kavanagh Winter Cup gets under way this Sunday, October 13th with 32 pairings entered.

Notes From Dunfanaghy

Last week’s Wednesday Open was won by Martin O’Reilly with 37 points, one clear of runner-up, Sean Diver on 36 pts.

The pairing of Kevin James and Don Sheridan won last Saturday’s fourball better ball event with a score of 45 points.

Freddie Stewart and Tony Griffin finished in second place following a break of tie with 44 pts.

Sunday’s “Golfer of the Year” Stroke competition attracted a large entry with the superb play of Billy Griffin rewarded with top spot after a nett 65 score.

Nigel Doherty finished one shot adrift to take the runners-up spot.
