City of Derry return to action following a two-week break with an Ulster Senior League trip to Ballynahinch tomorrow afternoon. (Kick-off: 2.30 p.m.)
Michael Wilson reports
The game represents an ideal opportunity for Bevan Lynch’s squad to get some game-time as they build-up to next weekend’s resumption of All Ireland League Division 2A and a tricky trip to bottom-placed Clonakilty. Tomorrow’s fixture is also likely to see influential full-back continue his rehabilitation toward a starting place as he targets a First XV spot for next week’s crucial clash.
With that game in mind, Derry’s Head coach has challenged his players to start translating performances into points.
“Every game is important to win but the priority has to be securing our position within All Ireland League Division 2A,” explained Lynch.
“We have to get some points on the board. It is okay to speak about the ability we have within the team but the league table does not lie. Last season we were scoring bonus point victories with ease but we have failed to do it this year.”
Chris Cooper is another player making his way back from long-term injury and Lynch will be hoping to have his squad back to full strength as the AIL enters it’s crucial period.
Derry are coming off the back of two victories against Malone and Ballymena, victories which have taken Derry up to fourth in the Ulster Senior League table, three points behind tomorrow’s opposition.
It is that form which Derry’s Head Coach wants to see continue and indeed be built on.
“After what has been a decent rest, Saturday is a chance to get rid of the ring-rust. It will be our first game of the year and we must build on our last two wins and maintain the accuracy we showed in those games.
“We must keep the ball and finish well, just as well did against Malone and Ballymena. We hope to build on that but we had home advantage in those games and that can count for an awful lot.
“Ballynahinch are a very good side and will be difficult to break down. We must ensure that we are disciplined and take any opportunities that arrive.”
