AILEEN Morrison has been selected as the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council ‘Sportswoman of the Month’ for October.
This prestigious title follows an aggressive start to the triathlon season where Morrison secured two medals; gold in the European Cup in Antalya, Turkey and silver in the World Cup in Ishigaki, Japan.
The local woman who combines membership of City of Derry Spartans and the North West Triathlon club as well as a background with the City of Derry Swimming club has almost certainly guaranteed her place in the Irish Triathlon squad for next year’s London Olympics.
A second place finish at last month’s World Cup Triathlon in South Korea on top of two earlier fourth placers in Mexico and Japan, boosted her to an Olympic qualifying position of 11th in advance of London 2012.
With the top ranked 55 females set to compete in London her participation is all but guaranteed.
High Performance Squad
Indeed, Morrison, a member of the Senior High Performance Squad, has emerged internationally as Ireland’s most exciting London 2012 Olympics prospect in Triathlon and has also been awarded an Olympic Solidarity award for London 2012.
Morrison’s success lies in victories such as her 5th place at the Waterways Ireland ITU European Championships in Athlone, which was the best result ever by an Irish triathlete.
In the World Championship Series in Hamburg, Morrison won a bronze medal which was the greatest achievement by an Irish triathlete in the sport to date.
With an impressive reputation among her sporting peers, and training well underway for the London Olympics, Morrison is a noteworthy competitor to stave off the immense competition for the title of Sportswoman of the Year in December.
