Cross Country receives boost

Cross country running in Northern Ireland is to receive a boost with the announcement of a new League which will be set up by Athletics N. Ireland.

The league will be incorporated into six meetings which are - Bobby Rea XC at Barnett’s Park on November 5th; McConnell Shield at Ballyclare on November 12th; Malcolm Cup, Ballyclare on December 3rd; North-West Championships at Grasha on December 17th; Greenmount International and Northern Ireland Senior at Antrim on January 21st and the Civil Service XC at Stormont on February 25th, 2012.

The new league has been established after an open consultation process with the athletics community, with all local clubs circulated and invited to submit their views on the way forward.

Joe Quinn, Chair of the Cross Country and Road Running Committee said: “Cross Country has been in the doldrums over recent years with dwindling numbers at all levels. Athletics Northern Ireland are determined to reinvigorate the scene.

“Many athletes just coming into the sport have no experience of cross country running and it is hoped that this initiative will open the door for new enthusiasts of ‘off road’ disciplines and re-establish it as an important element of the running calendar,” he said.

86.75 per cent of people who completed the survey sent to athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers were for the formation of a league with 13.25 per cent unsure and none against.

The league will feature combined senior and veterans’ races with prizes going to the top three teams as well as the top individual male and female performers. All competitors must be 16 years or over.

Scoring will be 10, 8, 6, 4 for the first four teams with men counting four and women three.

There will be bonuses for teams having large numbers of finishers.

It is hoped that the new league will enhance club competition and boost participation at all levels.

As stated above, this year’s Northern Ireland Senior Championships are being run in conjunction with the Antrim IAAF International Cross Country on January 21st thus ensuring a large crowd.
