The North West Triathlon Club member said: “I am so proud and delighted the North West Triathlon Club will be hosting a triathlon as part of City of Culture 2013. It promises to be a brilliant event and one not to miss. I wish them and the City every success in 2013 and look forward to taking part in the celebrations.”
The unique sporting spectacle will be hosted by the club on June 23, as part of the City of Culture Celebrations 2013.
It will include a 750m swim in the Foyle, a 20km cycle around the two road bridges and a 5km run from the city centre across the Peace Bridge to Ebrington Square and back to the quay finish line.
Up to 500 competitors from across Ireland and the UK taking are expected to take part in the event. Registration will open in early January and early entry is encouraged due to the high demand for places.
Registration can be made via the Triathlon Ireland website or by contacting a member of the North West Club.
Mayor, Colr Kevin Campbell said at the launch that he was “proud that Derry will host such a prestigious event.”
“I would also like to wish the North West Triathlon club success in not only this event but in their 30th anniversary celebrations.”
