Doherty dominates at City of Derry

FOLLOWING a superb spell of glorious weather, the Prehen course was presented in pristine condition for last weekend’s competitions with in excess of 120 players taking to the City of Derry fairways.

And the quality of the course was reflected in the scoring for Saturday’s Confined Stableford event.

In the end, the club’s competition convenor, Martin Doherty (20), returned a superb score of 43 points to take top honours ahead of a host of 42 point totals.

In second spot, following a break of tie and following up on last weekend’s win, was John Currie (22), who pipped Vincent Boyle (25) for the runners-up spot thanks to a superb back nine of 25 points.

In fourth spot, also following a break of tie, was John Rosborough (12) who carded three birdies including a fine effort at the difficult Par four 17th.

Next Saturday sees the start of season’s competitive events with the running of the Subscribers’ Cup. Members can book their tee-times online at but are reminded that, as usual, all annual subscriptions need to have been paid before entry to any competitions after March 31st.

City of Derry

Sunday Society

After the scoring fireworks of Saturday, City of Derry members expected that Sunday might see a repeat performance given that the conditions were a tad calmer.

And John Flynn (13), guaranteed that the expectant were not to be disappointed. John attacked the front nine holes to plunder a superb 25 points, including fine birdies at the 2nd and 6th. He added a further 22 points over the closing holes to top the leader board with a magnificent 47 points total.

Big hitting Gary Leckey (11) has been pushing hard to top the Sunday Society leader-board over the last few weeks and on this occasion he almost managed it. With 19 points on the opening nine holes and 24 on the back nine, he ensured second place on the day and second place in the ‘Golfer of the Year’ standings.

Hard working Hon. Secretary, Tony McCann (14), had his putting boots on during his round of 43 points that included birdies at the par five 3rd and par four 6th to take him out in 22 points. Tony added a further 21 points on the back nine to ensure third spot on the day. A shot further back in fourth place was club President, Mr Alan Montgomery (18) on 42 points with Martin Doherty (20) with 41 points fifth and in sixth place was Kevin Green (23), also on 41 but losing out to a break of tie over the closing nine holes.

Sunday Society Captain’s Day will be held on Sunday, April 3rd with the Sunday Society’s “Yellow Ball” teams of Four on Sunday, April 10th.

At this stage the final placings in the race for the ‘Golfer of the Year’ have been decided. Clive Brolly tops the table with Gary Leckey storming to second place by virtue of his late charge and Gavin Morren finishing in third spot. A full listing of finishing places can be found on the website and in the clubhouse.
