Glenn Claims First ‘Major’ of new season on Lisfannon Links

GLENN Hinds captured the first ‘major’ of the season at North-West when he posted a superb score of 67 nett to claim the annual Shamrock Open, the event which traditionally tees-off the new sedason at the Lisfannon club.

Playing off the back tees in the stroke-play event, the blustery conditions added to some difficult pin positions, saw one-third of the large field fail to complete their rounds.

In fact, just eight golfers broke 80 but some fantastic scores were returned in spite of the difficulties posed.

Glenn Hinds, playing off a 10 handicap returned the top score of 67 nett but his birdie at the final hole proved vital when winning on a break of tie from Otway Golf Club member, Sean Sweeney.

The North-West member took 39 strokes to complete the front nine which included a very ugly triple bogey “6” at the tricky par three 8th hole, “The Pifler.”

His front nine effort was followed up by a three over gross back nine highlighted by that birdie ‘4’ at the 18th.

With Sean Sweeney returning similar figures, the Otway player appeared to struggle at the par five 18th when, with the wind at his back, he could only manage a bogey “6.”

The best gross score of the day was returned by Michael Hegarty (2), a brilliant 71. Michael was two under gross for the last 11 holes, a remarkable score considering the conditions.

In third place was the evergreen John O’Brien (10) with another great score of 69 nett.

Winner of the back nine with a nett 33 was Paul Coyle (13) and Eamon O’Kane from Foyle was the winner of the visitors’ prize with a well compiled 72 nett.

The North-West Golf Club extend sincere thanks to Mr. Norris Sheaffer for supplying the ‘flags’ for the Shamrock Open, which was very much appreciated by all the Lisfannon membership.

Full results were - Shamrock Open - 1, break of tie, Glenn Hinds (10) 67 nett; 2, Sean Sweeney (15), Otway, 67; gross, Michael Hegarty, 71; 3, John O’Brien (10) 69; back nine, Paul Coyle, 33; visitor, Eamon O’Kane, Foyle, 72.

In last Sunday’s Confined Stableford, Category 1 players filled the top five places with five handicapper, Padraig Mac Lochlainn enjoying a welcome return to form with a one under gross 69 (42 points).

Padraig had birdies at the 4th, 6th, 9th, 16th and 18th holes.

The runner-up, playing of a two handicap, was Kyle McCarron, with 40 points. Kyle carded birdies at the 8th, 9th, 14th and 18th holes and his handicap has now been reduced to one

In third place was Justin Mac Lochlainn (4) with 38 points and he registered birdies at the 8th, 16th and 18th holes.
