Gold galore for Samurai Uladh in Galway Open

Samurai Uladh Judo Club players produced another display of their strength at the Galway Open as they returned home with an impressive medal tally of 12 gold, six silver and 15 bronze medals.

The medal haul was spread across all sections of the judo competition from the Minors, up to Cadets and then right through Juniors, Seniors and Veterans.

The youngest club members started the day off well with three golds in three consecutive weights for Aobhe McLaughlin (U27kgs), Sarah Jane Porter (U30kgs) and Eva Conaghan (U33kgs). This was followed with a bronze for Erika Lysenko (U33kgs) and a silver medal for Sinead Harnett (U44kgs).

On to the Minor boy’s competition where Joshua Rutherford (U28kgs) claimed silver and Pearse Jordan (U28kgs), Conal McLaughlin (U34kgs) and Callum Green (U37kgs) secured a trio of bronze medals.

From then on, the medals came thick and fast for the local Judo club made up of members from Derry, Burnfoot and Moville.

Many Moville students made their debut in this competition with three players taking part in the Mixed Ability Judo Assist Category and achieving medals; Alan Brown and Chantelle NcAuley claimed gold and Callum Harrison took silver.

The Cadet Girls added to the medal count with three gold, Jodie Jordan (U40kgs), Roisin O’Brien (U48kgs) and Samanthan Weir (O63kgs) and four bronze medals from Mariead Dobbins and Chantelle McAuley (U36kgs), Chloe Moir and Bronagh Moore (U63kgs).

Again the Cadet Boys continued to earn successes with silvers for Joshua Green (U41kgs), Tiarnan McGilloway (U50kgs) and Jordan Green (U73kgs) and three bronze from Conal Doogan (U45kgs), Gareth Townley and Luke Farren (U55kgs).

The Junior Women section provided Samurai Uladh with two golds from Kathleen McNaught (U63kgs) and Samantha Weir (U70kgs) and Kathleen also went on to compete in the Senior competition and again come away with the gold Medal.

Not to be outdone by the club’s younger members, coach, Paul Green entered not only the Veteran category but also the Senior Men U90kgs.

While coming away with a bronze medal in the Senior category, Paul added to the medal collection with a clean sweep and gold medal in the Veterans.

Also participating in the Veteran section were Manus O’Donnell (U73kgs), Phil Townley (U73kgs) and Clive Roylance (U90kgs).

All three came home with bronze medals and a special congratulations to Philip Townley who was taking part in his first ever judo competition.
