The FINAL competition of 2011 in the North-Western Alliance season will be long remembered by the 57 competitors who teed-off at Ballyliffin and, indeed, all credit to the 23 hardy souls who managed to return complete their rounds on Saturday last.

Having to deal with the worst possible weather conditions, it came as no surprise that scoring would be particularly low on the Old Links.

Despite the horrendous conditions with a galeforce wind blowing across the course and those on the greens putting through hail storms, the Old Links stood up to the test and always remained playable which was great credit to the greekeeping staff of the Inishowen club.

Predictably, there were no shortage of double, treble and quadruple bogeys on cards that saw their way into the prize list with the front nine the most difficult for all, with the exception of this year’s Alliance Captain, Noel Callan, who was just three over but, playing into the wind on the back nine, that score ballooned to 12 over.

In fact the winner of the gross, his brother John, was 8 over for the front nine but just 2 over on the home nine. The runner-up was Foyle’s popular teaching professional, Sean Young, who was 6 over after nine and 7 over on the way home, a model of consistency.

The current leader in the nett category of the “Golfer of the Year,” Odhran McGettigan, continued to show his class with another fine round. His good finish of three over par for the last four holes - following a triple bogey at the 14th - saw him finish just ahead of Strabane clubmate, Ciaran Patton, who dropped five strokes over the last four holes.

The ‘Golfer of the Year’ positions, with six of the nine counting competitions completed, reads - Nett Sectiion - 1, Odhran McGettigan (Strabane), 33 points; 2, John Callan (Ballycastle), 26; 3, Michael O’Donnell (Letterkenny), 20 and 4, Eddie McHugh (Letterkenny) 18.

Gross Section - 1, Enda Kennedy (Rosapenna), 45 points; 2, Sean Quigg (City of Derry), 31; 3, Michael McGeady (McCambridge-Duffy) 28; 4, John Callan (Ballycastle) 26.

Meanwhile, all those associated with the Alliance extends good wishes to Michael McGeady who will be in action until December 5th at the second stage Qualifying for a European Tour card. Michael is among 300 hopefuls and is lying 24th in La Manga following up on his first day round of 75 with a great 68. Congratulations also to his ‘man on the bag,’ City of Derry member, Kevin Quigg.
