Oakleaf Amateur Boxing Club’s Ryan Green gained a notable victory when competing for Ireland in the prestigious round-robin Veles Cup held in Kurgan this week.
The International Invitational which is staged in Kurgan, approximately 1,300 miles east of Moscow in the Oblast region of Russia, involves the elite amateur boxers from Germany, Russia, USA and Ireland.
And local pugilist, Green shocked the home support when defeating current the Russian No.1 and reigning European champion at 45kgs.
The win was undoubtedly the 15 year-old St Joseph’s student’s finest victory so far and he is now set to fight the German national champion and Russian No.2 before he returns home this Sunday.
Dominic O’Rourke, Director of Boxing of the IABA highlighted the significance of Green’s win against the Russian: “At the recent European Championships Russia won eight gold and four silver therefore this was a great victory for the young Bridgend lad.”
And Oakleaf chairman, Eugene O’Kane echoed those sentiments;
“The experience Ryan has gained through his experience in Russia will no doubt stand him in good stead and will give him the confidence to fulfil his ambition of boxing in next year’s World Championships.”
