SLIDESHOW-The Walled City Marathon 2013

Plans are already underway to make the Walled City Marathon an annual fixture in Derry.

Following Sunday’s event when thousands of people turned out to cheer on around 1,300 runners, there were immediate calls for the marathon to become a mainstay in the city’s sporting calender.

The dust barely had time to settle before runners were calling for more.

Speaking at the finish line after completing his first 26.2 mile endurance, local SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan echoed calls of his fellow runners: “So many people want this to happen every year and I’ll be calling for support to make this an annual event. This should grow and grow. I’ll be chatting with the organisers to see how we can go about it. Let’s do it all again, the Walled City Marathon has been a great showcase for our city.”

Race Director Noel McMonagle said the 2014 race would be “up for discussion” in the coming days and weeks. “On the evidence of the success of the event, there’s a good case for another next year.

“It’s all down to funding and if that can be secured then we’ll be on our way,” he added.
