STRABANE’S popular leading official, Mr. Brian O’Kane, will host his Captain’s Day tomorrow and with a packed timesheet guaranteeing success, hopes are high that the weather will be favourable.
The Captain’s Presentation of Prizes will take place in the clubhouse with entertainment supplied by “Mr. Men.”
Members are requested to use the Carricklee Room bar until the conclusion of the meal at approximately 10.30 p.m.
Meanwhile, local driving instructor, Paddy Arbuckle (21), held his nerve to take last weekend’s big competition, The Modern Tyre Services Open thanks to a storming finish.
Paddy returned a fine score of 42 points to secure his maiden victory.
The unlucky runner-up was Aidan Boyle (5) who returned a season’s best 68 gross also resulting in 42 points, but he lost out on break of tie over the last 6 holes.
Also in fine form was Chris McDermott (12) whose level par second nine gave him a total of 41 points for third place. Peter Doherty Jnr. (7) took 4th with 40 pts the same total as 5th placed David Mullen (11).
The gross went to Cathal Patton with 34 points with the ‘nines’ going to Adrian McGonagle with 22 pts. and Chris Timoney with an eye catching 25 pts for the second nine.
There was also an excellent entry of just over 100 players for the McGoldrick Sports Open on Thursday last and results were - 1, Ryan McGowan (7) 43 points; 2, break of tie, Martin McDermott (5) 39; 3, Paddy Arbuckle (21) 39; gross, Patrick Kennedy (2) 35 pts.
Monday Open Stableford results - 1, Daniel Patteon (14) 44 points; 2, John Maxwell (15) 42; 3, Shane McLaughlin (12) 40; gross, Paddy Kennedy.
The start of Mr Brian O’Kanes Captains Week got underway on Sunday last with the traditional Captains Mixed Foursomes and despite the horrendous afternoon downpours play proceeded with 31 pairs braving the elements.
Results were - 1, Annette Patton and Patsy Wilson, 64 nett; 2, Rachael Devenney and Frankie Connolly, 65.5; 3, Geraldine McCrory and Pat Corry, 66.5; gross, Dympna Doherty and Ben Corry 81.
Stableford prize - Olive Reid and Denis Porter with 38 pts.
Last Wednesday’s Mixed Scramble event was won my Lauren and Lisa Patton, Conal Cooke and Conor Sharkey with a fantastic return of 45.2 nett with Dympna Doherty, Lorna Duffy Rory Doherty and Ciaran Doherty with 46.6 nett.
Strabane’s Barton Shield team bowed out to Foyle despite a fine first round win over a fancied Letterkenny.
The Junior Fred Daly team secured their third win with a comprehensive defeat of Ballymena, they now meet Ballyclare in the last 16 this Sunday at home.
Chris McDermott’s Phair Cup team have progressed to the semi-final after securing 5 pts in last Friday’s away leg.
The Senior Cup team will attempt to qualify for matchplay stages at Portstewart this Sunday.
