CITY OF Derry Captain, Mr Jack Farland has lauded with praise all those involved in staging and participating in one of the club’s most successful Open Weeks in recent years, at the Open Week prizegiving last weekend.
Over 200 visitors descended on the Prehen fairways throughout this past week with in excess of 1,200 cards taken out across all competitions during the course of a highly successful week.
And the club Captain, who addressed all participants at the prizegiving evening, acknowledged the huge amount of work that the green staff and member volunteers had put in after the recent inclement weather in making sure the course was in pristine condition.
He also commended the work of the competition’s Committee and the staff of Head Professional, Sam Smallwoods in making the Open Week such a success.
Finally, he thanked all the City of Derry Golf Club sponsors for their continued involvement with the club and welcomed the new sponsors who have become involved this year.
Despite the strong winds which howled across the course on Monday, Martin McNulty (15) produced the round of the Open Week with a superb 43 points to take top prize in the Mizuno Open Stableford.
Kevin Doherty (15) almost matched Martin’s efforts with his carded 42 point tally that required a back nine tie-breaker to separate it from third placed Michael Lynch (21).
Sean Quigg (2) produced the best gross of the day with a superb 69 while Eugene Hillick (26) found his 22 point tally good enough for the Front Nine prize. William Sheaffer (11) carded a brilliant 24 over the closing holes to take the Back Nine prize and Foyle Golf Club’s K. Dunn was the best of the visitors with 37 points.
The Open Week competitions continued on Wednesday with the Kelly Fuel Open Stableford.
Portsalon’s Connor Connolly (5) found the speedy greens just like home as he carded 40 points to take first place.

The DaVincis Ramada Hotel Open Stableford was Thursday’s Open Week offering and as summer returned to Derry for a brief spell it was five-handicapper John Crumlish who found the sunny conditions most to his liking when he carded 40 points to take the top spot.

Late on Friday afternoon the formidable pairing of Mark and Eileen Reilly, Ballybofey GC, stormed home with a grand total of 38 points to take the Campsie Paper Company Mixed Foursomes title.

The Foyle Delta Cabs Open Stableford enjoyed a massive turnout on Saturday when more than 200 members attempted to land the inaugural title.
By close of play it was club stalwart, George Jackson (13) who scooped the title by reporting a score of 43 points.

And Sunday sees the eagerly awaited Professional’s Teams of Four (any combination) where the top prize will be entry into the McCambridge Duffy sponsored City of Derry Pro-Am which takes place this year from Friday, June 15th to Sunday June 17th.

Foyle Golf Club Classic held last week attracted a very fine entry of 23 teams for the Teams of Four competition which had a hidden hole format.
