IT WAS a special day for everyone running the Walled City Marathon but for one romantic pair, it was a moment they’ll cherish forever.
Derry runner, Joseph Kennedy crossed the finish line after the 26.2 mile stretch, got down on one knee and popped the question to his long term girlfriend, Eimear Kelly.
The couple have been together for the past five years and Bogside man, Joseph, who was running the gruelling race for the MS Society, explained it was the easiest decision he’s ever made!
“It started off with doing a bit of training with the brother around January and then I decided to do the marathon for MS and I managed to raise about £1,000,” he said.
“As a romantic gesture I thought it would be nice to ask her to marry me at the finish line. I have the feet walked off her the last five years,” he smiled. “Luckily enough she said yes.
“We’ve been going out for five years on Thursday past, June 2nd and I was going to do it then but then I thought I might as well wait till after the marathon - what better way to do it.
It was great to have all our friends and family here to be part of the moment. So it’s a day to remember!Joe Kennedy
“I said to her on the line that it was one my worst decision ever to do a marathon and I want to back it up by make the easiest decision by asking you to marry me. Well I think that’s what I said anyway.
“She was obviously stunned. It was kept a secret by members of my family and her family. It was great to have all our friends and family here to be part of the moment. So it’s a day to remember!”
