In scorching weekend temperatures, local ‘Ultra runner’ Hannah Shields was the first female finisher and third overall at the Stonemad Ultra two day endurance event staged in Counties Carlow, Kildare and Kilkenny on Saturday and Sunday.

With a combined time of 13.5 hours the local dentist battled the oppressive heat, the 119 kilometre slog, the melting tarmac, dust and the climbs, to win the womens section by over two hours and finish an exceptional third overall.

Day one on Saturday was a 64K trek along the Barrow river with temperatures hitting 30 degrees at times and 6 hours and 40 minutes later Hannah emerged exhausted but the leading lady by a considerable time margin.

Sunday was slightly cooler at 27 degrees and there was a bit of a breeze as the competitors tackled the climbs of Mount Leinster and the melting tarmac. The 55k trek included some 31k of climbing and serious navigation but the local lady was equal to it and successfully finished in 6 hours 50 minutes for a richly deserved victory.

A brilliant effort from a top class endurance athlete and a true Spartan!
