Long time leaders toppled as Winter League qualifying concludes at Lisfannon

THE qualifying stages of the North West Golf Club Winter League have concluded and Edward John Grant and Andrew McDermott can go into the last 16 with confidence having finished top of the pile, toppling long term leaders, John McCarron and Harry Coyle from their perch.

With the top eight teams going through to the round of 16 automatically, Ciaran Quigley and Kevin McGowan returned a magnificent 46 points in the final qualifying week to force their way into the final automatic spot at the expense of three other teams who finished with a best of four scores total of 160.

Unfortunately they were not entered in the weekly sweep, which went to Grant and McDermott on 44pts.

Second place in the sweep went to Declan Rennick and Tom Grant on 40 points.

The final placings are posted on the club notice boards and also on the club’s website.

Meanwhile the preliminary round, involving teams finishing on 9th to 24th, will take place on Sunday, November 8th. The draw for this preliminary round will be posted in both the club notice boards as well as the club website.

Hallowe’en Open

With a solid round of 4 over gross in each of the nines, Norris Sheaffer won the Hallowe’en Open Stroke competition on Saturday, October 31st with a nett 67.

A run of four bogies at the start of the back nine cost Gavan Doherty dearly, returning a nett 68, followed in third place by Martin Glenn on 69. The gross prize went to Kealan Quigg on 73.

With the fourth round cards returned in the qualifying section of the Desmond Motors Winter League at Foyle, Team 14, consisting of Mark Doherty, Ciaran O’Doherty, Michael Henry and Dermott Harkin having an accumulated 368 points total for their four cards, maintain a slender two point lead over Team 20 after both teams returned excellent scores of 93 points.

In the Ladies section of the league after four rounds, Team 2, consisting of Myra Gough, Lorna Thompson and Florence Rankin, having accumulated 208 points from their four cards, move into a 12 point lead over Team 8.

Meanwhile, week five of the Foyle Sunday Society members once again turned out in force with the in-form 11 handicapper, Ciaran O’Doherty gaining his second podium position of the season with an excellent winning score of 41 points, two points clear of runner-up, John Lafferty who held a one point advantage over third placed Gary McElroy.

The highlight of the Turkey Competitions at Foyle last week was a hole-in-one at the par three eight hole where Mark Doherty struck the perfect eight iron to hole out for his ace.
