Spartan Stewart hits Euro Youth Qualifying time at Mary Peter's Track

City of Derry Spartans' emerging talent, Fintan Stewart, celebrated his 17th birthday in some style at Saturday's Belfast International Trace and Field meeting on the Mary Peters track, emphatically smashing his 1,500m PB with a terrific 3m 57.31s in the '˜A' graded metric mile race.

A superb run in a field of mainly senior athletes yielded his first ever sub-four minute clocking over 1,500m and came with an added bonus of getting inside the qualifying standard for the upcoming European Youth Games. Could be much more to come this summer from the Lumen Christi student who has excelled on track, road and country in recent months!

A good run also from Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin, his 8m 27.29s in the 3,000m another impressive effort from the local star while Shane McGowan posted a 1m 57.26s clocking in one of the higher graded 800m races at the Belfast meet.

Derry City Track Club’s Doherty siblings, Matt and Connor, also went over 800m as did the Spartans’ Liam George with sprinter Stephan McGahey and Sprint Hurdler/Multi-eventer Naomi Morgan.

In the Boys 1,000 metres young Finn O’Neill did well with a third place run of 3m 22s.
