Craft beer got a proper Derry welcome at ‘Sippy of Culture’ 2015 at the weekend.
The beer tasting event took place in Legenderry Warehouse No. 1 on Saturday night and was completely sold out.
Since its inception in 2013, ‘Sippy of Culture’, has been hosted in kitchens and enjoyed by a small group of craft beer loving friends. This year’s event was the first time ‘Sippy of Culture’, was opened up to the general public and the only beers tasted at this year’s showcase were from the local area.
Brewers from Derry, Donegal and Tyrone all took part and a wide array of beers, including pilsner, porter and wheat beer, were all available to sample.
The brewers who took part were Walled City Brewery (Ebrington), Northbound Brewery (Campsie), Kinnegar Brewery (Rathmullan) and Fulcrum Brewery (Dungannon).
Each of the brewers were given the chance to enter as many of their beers into the competition and beer tasters were asked to mark the beers for their branding, presentation in the glass, aroma and most importantly of all, on taste.
The overall winner on the night was a wheat beer from Fulcrum with an average mark of 39 out of 50.
Stephen McKenna, Fulcrum owner, said he was delighted to be named ‘Sippy of Culture’ beer of the year for 2015 and was presented with the trophy by ‘Sippy of Culture’ committee member and event organiser, Brian Rainey.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to come to an event like this - this is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind when I set the brewery up 18 months ago,” said Stephen.
“I am absolutely delighted to have won the ‘Sippy of Culture’ award and I am already looking forward to next year’s event,” he added.
Brian Rainey is one of the founders of ‘Sippy of Culture’ and he said he was overwhelmed at how the event was received locally.
“This event would not have been possible had it not been for all of the brewers, the sponsors and I would really like to thank Keith Baldrick at Legenderry Warehouse No 1 - his team did an amazing job.
“To be honest, I was nervous because I have never done anything like this before so a lot of it was uncharted territory but thankfully we pulled it off and it was a success. I’d also like to thank everyone who came along to the event because that what ‘Sippy of Culture’ is all about - enjoying good beers with like-minded people.”
Brian added: “We have exciting plans for ‘Sippy of Culture’ and it’s our hope to organise another event around the German beer festival of Oktoberfest later in the year.”
