Ahead of the annual comics extravaganza that is the 2D Comics Festival, the Verbal Arts Centre are reminding the city’s budding young artists about their amazing 2013 comic art competition, ‘Colmcille VS Loch Ness Monster – the Battle!’

Verbal has joined forces with the Derry Journal, The Return of Colmcille, Derry City Council and the Culture Company to create this special art competition to celebrate the life of St. Colmcille, as will be depicted in the ‘The Return of Colmcille’ spectacular on June 7-8 this year.

As patron Saint of Derry, Colmcille is famous for many remarkable achievements in his life - but one of the most exciting was his battle with the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland in 565AD! Colmcille is described as a superhero monk and may have needed powers of some kind to defeat the dreaded ‘water beast’! 2D Northern Ireland Comic Festival are now inviting entrants to draw the scene showing Colmcille in battle with the Loch Ness Monster. Scary, cute, or whatever shape or size you want - the only limit is your imagination!

Please supply art on an A4 or A3 page. It can be in black and white or colour, and all entries must be signed by your teacher. The competition spans a number of age groups and six prizes will be awarded - one in each age group and key stage.

Each prize consists of a £75 Gift Voucher for Smyths Toy Shop, a Family Pass for the fantastic ‘Heroes & Legends’ show, featuring characters, sets and props from movies and TV shows such as Spiderman, Harry Potter, The Muppets, Lord of the Rings and Batman.

Heroes & Legends is part of the 2D Comics Festival, being held in the Millennium Forum on Saturday, June 1, from 10am-5pm, and Sunday, June 2, from 11.30am-4.30pm. Winners will also get a ‘2D Comics Festival’ pack (festival bag, folder, pens, pencils, pencil case) and, as if that’s not enough - all your winning art will be featured right here - in glorious full colour - in the Derry Journal newspaper!
