A Derry choir is singing the praises of the Grand National winner after reining in bags of cash!
Members of Derry’s Encóre Contemporary Choir were chomping at the bit to take a punt on namesake Auroras Encore, who left them quids in when it romped to victory at 66 -1.
Marie Dunne, who has been with the choir since it was set up in February 2011, put £3 on the nose of the winner and netted £201. A few others jumped at the chance as well while some who were less brave and backed the winner each way, enjoyed returns averaging £150 each.
But the world’s most famous steeplechase was ‘neigh’ craic for one particular choir member. Local woman Colleen McKeever decided to put £5 on the horse online but she had never backed online before and she lost her nerve, and potential winnings of £335, before completing the bet!
But Colleen is delighted for her fellow choir members and particularly for one member, Cathy O’Neill who was completely flabbergasted at her win.
“I’ve never picked a Grand National winner in my life,” said Cathy. “And I didn’t think for one minute that I would win. But when I saw the name of the horse, I had to back it, and I’m very glad I did!”
