The Executive Committee for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013 met for the first time this week to formalise plans for next year’s All Ireland Fleadh in Derry.
The group, with representatives from civic organisations as well as local, provincial and national Comhaltas units, met in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin to discuss structures for the historic event which will be held in Derry in August 2013.
Fleadh 2013 and Comhaltas Dhoire chairperson Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh said: “We, in Derry Comhaltas, will be hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013 and we will ensure it is a very special event. Its success depends on all of us working together to make it so.
“Securing the Fleadh for Derry has been a long, difficult and protracted journey but I want to move forward in the spirit of this honourable organisation and deliver the first Fleadh to be held in the North of Ireland as an all inclusive cultural event.
“I want to send out a message of unity that everyone represented on the Fleadh Executive Committee is one hundred per cent behind this Fleadh.”
The Fleadh is the world’s biggest celebration of traditional Irish culture that attracts over a quarter of a million visitors and generates 40 euro million for the local economy.
