It might be miles away from Dublin but Harry’s Bar and Restaurant is officially the best in Ireland.
Located less than a mile across the Derry/Donegal border, the locally owned restaurant basked in glory recently when revered Irish Times food critic, Catherine Cleary, awarded the restaurant the title of ‘Best Restaurant’ for 2014.
“To be honest with you, I was a little confused at the start because last week our restaurant in Portstewart, Harry’s Shack, was awarded ‘Best Restaurant in Ireland’ by well known food writers, John and Sally McKenna.
“I received a text message from a well known chef in Galway congratulating me but I thought he was referring to Harry’s Shack.”
A few days later, Donal was in Harry’s Restaurant and both he and head chef Derek Creagh had been forwarded a link to an article online and before long, the pair realised that a second award had come - only this time it was from the Irish Times and it was for Harry’s Restaurant.
“I am absolutely over the moon,” said Donal.
“Derek is one of the best chefs to ever come out of Ireland and his team are outstanding but I also want to take this opportunity to praise and thank the front of house staff because throughout the years they were the one thing that was never broken in Harry’s.
“To receive this award from someone like Catherine Cleary is a fantastic honour for us because she is revered as a food writer and she is regarded as very fair. Catherine was impressed with three aspects of the restaurant. She praised the way in which we source our fresh fish straight off the boats in Donegal and she was also impressed with the two acres of land we have nearby that we use to grow all of our fresh vegetables. But the last thing she liked a lot was the value for money we offered. I am obviously delighted but I am just so happy for the team.
“We are looking forward to a bright and successful 2015”, said Donal smiling.
