Derry’s successful Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which saw 430,000 people visit the city in August has been nominated for several prestigious festival awards.

The Fleadh has been nominated for the Best Small Festival, Best Metropolitan Festival and Best Family categories in the Festival Awards 2013 and, if successful, will go through to the European Festival Awards.

The Mayor of Derry, councillor Martin Reilly urged Derry people to support the Fleadh and vote online to help secure the awards.

“The Fleadh Cheoil was a superb event for the city and one of the main highlights of the City of Culture year. The event showcased everything that is good about our city with record numbers of people coming to the city to participate and be part of the celebrations.

“I am delighted the Fleadh and its organisers and support agencies have been acknowledged in this way and hope they are successful in going through to the European awards,” he said.

Public voting got underway on Tuesday and will continue throughout October.
