A Derry audience will tomorrow night get their first chance to watch a local teenager battle to win a role in hit US musical drama Glee.
Damian McGinty, whose stock has risen quickly since he first enjoyed global fame in the Phil Coulter creation Celtic Thunder as a 14 year-old, is one of 12 finalists taking part in the Glee Project - a reality TV show where contestants vie for one of two roles on the hit show. The show airs for the first time this side of the Atlantic tomorrow night at 8pm on Sky1.
Damian, from Lower Galliagh, says taking part in the show is all about improving as a performer.
“I entered into it to learn a lot about myself, to help progress my abilities, and basically to get better and to learn more in what I do, so I can be the performer I want to be.
“At the minute I’m at a certain level and I want to keep improving myself.”
The 18 year-old - the only non US citizen taking part in the show - was combining his studies on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts at the North West Regional College’s (NWRC) Strand Road Campus, with his touring commitments with Celtic Thunder, before landing a place on the show.
He says the skills learned at the NWRC have been invaluable.
“I’ve loved every last minute of it. It’s taught me a lot, it’s pushed me forward, and introduced me ,to parts of show-business I never knew existed.”
Course Co-coordinator for the Performing Arts programmes, Anne McMaster says Damian’s achievements are “fantastic.”
