A special talk will take place next month focusing on the life of the real St Patrick, and delivered by local historian Dr Brian Lacey.

The event will take place on Wednesday March 11 in the Verbal Arts Centre and is being organised by Derry City Council’s Good Relations Team.

Mayor of Derry Councillor Brenda Stevenson encouraged people to go along to find out more about Ireland’s patron saint, who arrived in the country in the 5th Century.

The Mayor said: “There are so many myths about St Patrick that many local people - although we celebrate the day – don’t really know the true history.

“Dr Brian Lacey is renowned for his fascinating insights into his life and this will be an interesting and very relevant talk, so I would really encourage people to attend.”

Angela Askin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council, said the event was geared towards revealing the man behind the myth ahead of the city’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

“We are delighted to have secured Brian to deliver this talk to allow people to re-connect with the story of St Patrick and his lasting legacy both in Ireland and all over the world in advance of the celebrations the following week.

“Often the celebrations overshadow the reason for the celebrations, and this will be a chance to explore story of St Patrick and explore myths around his life and legacy.”

St Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland and his feast day, March 17, is the occasion of festivities all over the world.

The talk will explore the evidence that survives about the man himself and the growth of the traditions about him, the talk will also examine some of the less likely legends, such as the story about his connection with the shamrock the banishing of the snakes.

Anyone who wishes to attend the event, which takes place on 11th March in the Verbal Arts Centre from 11.30 – 2pm, is asked to contact Michaela Devine on 71365151 ext 8223 or
