He’s worked with the South African riot police and Wonderbra - and now an acclaimed photographer is to give classes in Derry.

Florens who is recognised as one of the world’s leading wedding photographers will deliver a six-hour live class on photographing brides and models on June 23, followed by a hands-on,in-person workshop with twelve lucky participants on June 24.

Florens arrives in Northern Ireland at the invitation of Derry-based digital start-up Engage, which offers free streamed courses, paid for downloads, in-person workshops and mentoring sessions aimed at aspiring and professional photographers interested in learning more about all aspects of the photography industry, from wedding, food and baby photography to developing brands and promoting businesses online.

Florens first picked up a camera while serving with the South African riot police, documenting disturbances and crime scenes for a then newly-formed police photographic unit. Learning on the job, he developed his skills thereafter as a photojournalist, and has since published portraits of South Africa’s most famous personalities, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, in a coffee table book entitled ‘Perfect Weekend’.

Acknowledged by Nikon as one of the world’s most influential photographers, Florens has worked on commercial campaigns for Wonderbra and Quiksilver, fashion shoots for television and print, and a-list weddings around the world.

Florens’ in-person workshop on June 24 takes place in Derry’s Beech Hill Country House Hotel, and deals with photographing brides, models and portraits, but also the broader themes of establishing a unique photographic style, working on large-scale set ups and promoting your photography business via social media.

Brett Florens’ in-person workshop has a limited capacity of twelve participants. Places cost £295 per person, and can be purchased online at One-to-one mentoring sessions via Skype, involving Florens or any of the other Engage mentors, are also available.
