9,200 jobs furloughed in Derry

Over 9,000 people have been placed on furlough in Derry during the COVID-19 outbreak, according to new data released by the Conservative party.

In total 9,200 jobs in the Foyle constituency have been put on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS).

Meanwhile, 3,100 self-employed people in Derry are receiving grants worth £7,200,000 under the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEEIS).

When the Strabane area is included the figures are even higher.

Businesses furloughed 14,100 jobs in Derry City and Strabane between April 20 when the CJRS was launched and May 31.

SEEIS supported 5,300 self-employed individuals in Derry City and Strabane who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus outbreak and paid grants worth a total of £13,700,000 up to May 31, 2020.

In the north as a whole 211,700 jobs have been furloughed and 69,000 people are receiving grants worth £198,000,000 in SEISS monies.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, said: “Our economic response to coronavirus was designed to keep people in work, protect people’s incomes, and support businesses. These measures have been on a scale unmatched by any government in recent history. All to give us the best chance of recovering quickly as the economy reopens."
