In a joint statement, Liam Gallagher and Gareth Scott of the Unite union, expressed disappointment that the pay increase was being withdrawn.

The local organisers said meat plant workers across Europe had been among the key workers who had helped put food on tables throughout the coronavirus crisis.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a new public understanding of the essential role played by workers in our industry,” they stated.

The ‘Journal’ asked the Foyle Food Group for a response to the appeal by Messrs. Gallagher and Scott but the company said it will not be commenting.

The company is a major food producer and employer across the entire north west region.

According to the Foyle Food Group website it operates nine state of the art facilities.

This includes facilities in Derry, Donegal and in Omagh, and when at full production the company processes 7,500 cattle a week, employing more than 1300 staff.
