Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has urged participation in a community consultation following the announcement last month by the Braidwater Group of its intention to build a 250-acre development, in an area known as The Cashel, near Coshquin.

The site, which is located at lands west of Buncrana Road between Whitehouse Road and Benview Estate in Coshquin, is expected to deliver more than 3,000 new social, affordable, and private homes, and create a new urban village.

Speaking about the community consultation, the Foyle MLA said: “In October the Braidwater Group announced its intention to build a 250-acre development, in an area known as The Cashel, near Coshquin.

“There is now a community consultation under way to get the views of the people of the city and to try and shape what they would like to see on this vast site, and ensure we get this right from the outset.

“There is also an onus on developers to ensure that new developments are beneficial to the local community so I again welcome Braidwater’s plans to include new community buildings, schools, retail and convenience facilities in the development. Trees are also to be planted as part of a bio-diversity drive to make the project carbon neutral.

“This will be the largest development of its kind anywhere in the North for ten years. It represents a multi-million investment which will provide a huge boost to the building sector and local economy.

“I would urge people to make their views known as part of that process in the coming period.”

With Covid-19 restrictions limiting physical consultation events, the process has moved online giving local residents and business owners the opportunity to provide the planning team with vital feedback ahead of Braidwater’s submission to Derry City and Strabane District Council.
