“Last year the Council backed the demand long held by trade unions, People Before Profit and many others for employers to end the use of these highly exploitative practices. The Council supported the demand to do all in its power to end the use of zero hours by employers in Derry and the North West.

“Working with local trade union activists, People Before Profit have made sure the Council followed through on its obligation to the motion and to hold this meeting.”

Colr. Harkin said that the Derry Trade Union Council will present at the meeting with Owen Reidy, Assistant Secretary of the ICTU and a representative from the Nevin Institute.

“The New Decade, New Approach agreement includes a commitment to end Zero Hour Contracts. We plan on making sure this is implemented here. A ban took effect in the South last year. Employers across the North are now on notice,” he added.
