Shantallow Post Office re-opening at Supervalu Greenhaw in Derry

Confirmation that a Post Office is to re-open next month at Super Valu on Greenhaw Road in Derry has been welcomed.

The post office is due to open on Monday, November 30 at 1pm.

This will restore service to the community after the previous Shantallow Post Office at The Northside in Shantallow closed in March 2026, following the resignation of the postmaster.

The opening hours will be Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm and Sunday from 9am to 1pm.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “This will provide 70 hours of service per week for the convenience of customers.

“The new branch is approximately 0.8 miles from the previous branch, along varied terrain.

“There is a customer car park at the new premises with dedicated disabled parking. There is also public transport available to and from the surrounding areas.

“A similar range of Post Office products and services will be available as before.”

SDLP Ballyarnett Councillor Catherine McDaid welcomed the announcement.

Councillor McDaid said: “I know there was significant concern across the greater Shantallow and Galliagh areas following the announcement that the Post Office at Northside Shopping Village would close. The SDLP immediately made representations on behalf of local residents, stressing the importance of maintaining these services in the area. I’m delighted that a new premises has been secured and that a date has now been confirmed for the branch to reopen at SuperValu on Greenhaw Road.

“Post Offices provide services that go far beyond sending letters and parcels. Many people, particularly older residents, rely on them to withdraw their pension, access banking services and make payments. Just as importantly, the friendly and familiar service provided by Post Office staff means a great deal to those who use the branch. Losing this service altogether would have left a significant gap in the community.

“It’s important that residents know where and when they can continue to access these services, and I’m pleased that the new opening date has now been confirmed. I want to wish the staff every success as they prepare to welcome customers back on November 30.”
