The real power of post-break-up appointment - Hair To Go with Derry's Margaret Doherty & Co.

There’s something about a break-up that nearly always ends up in the salon chair.

You could nearly set your watch by it. A girl walks in, sits down, looks at herself in the mirror for a second longer than usual, and you know. There’s a different energy about her. Then it comes, “I need a change.”

And just like that, the chop is on.

Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes it starts small. “Maybe just a few layers” or “take a wee bit off the ends.” But give it ten minutes into the consultation and we’re talking fringes, colour changes, the full transformation. And I’m standing there thinking, right… This isn’t about the hair at all.

Over the years, I’ve seen it all. Hair down to the waist, gone in one appointment. Dark colours lifted to bright blondes. Extensions were whipped out in frustration or put in for a confidence boost. It’s never really about the hair, it’s about taking control back.

Because when life feels like it’s falling apart, changing your hair feels like something you can control.

And I get it. I really do.

There’s something powerful about sitting in that chair, having a proper chat, a wee vent, maybe a tear or two and then watching yourself slowly come back to life in the mirror. The blow-dry at the end isn’t just a style, it’s a reset, shoulders back, chin up, a different woman walking out than the one who came in.

Break-ups have a way of knocking your confidence sideways. You start questioning everything, yourself, your worth, your decisions. And sometimes, all it takes is seeing a stronger version of yourself staring back at you to remind you who you are.

That’s where we come in.

Hairdressers aren’t just there to do your roots and send you on your way. We’re part listener, part therapist, part hype woman. We see women at their lowest, when they’re feeling raw and unsure, and we help build them back up, one appointment at a time.

And here’s the truth, the “new hair, new me” isn’t just a saying people throw about. There’s something real in it.

When life feels like it’s falling apart, changing your hair feels like something you can control.placeholder image

It’s not about impressing anyone else. It’s not about proving a point to an ex or showing up differently on social media. It’s about you deciding that you’re moving forward. That you’re not staying stuck. That you’re allowed to feel good again, even when things haven’t gone to plan.

I’ve watched women walk into my salon looking completely defeated, and walk out glowing, not because the haircut was magic, but because they made a decision. A decision to start fresh, to lift their head, to back themselves again.

And that’s the real transformation.

So if you ever find yourself sitting in that chair after a breakup, wondering if you should go for the big change, the fringe, the colour, the chop, just know, it’s not really about the hair.

It’s about taking a moment for yourself in the middle of chaos and saying, “Right, enough. I’m starting again.”

And trust me, there’s no better place to do that than in a salon chair, with a good chat, a fresh blow-dry, and that quiet confidence building inside you, knowing that whatever’s next…

You’re ready for it.

Love Margaret.
