The local cross-community group had been planning to travel to Spain for a prestigious tournament in April, but the COVID-19 pandemic put paid to those plans, for now.

Maiden City Soccer Boys was formed in 2016 and players were signed from local youth teams in other leagues to compete in the NI National League ‘A’.

As current NI Champions, Maiden City were invited to partake in the prestigious Mediterranean International Cup in Costa Brava, Europe’s largest pro-youth tournament boasting past participants such as Messi, Marcello and Coutinho. Approximately 250 teams were entered representing 42 countries.

Greg O’Kane, Unite DuPont/Lycra Secretary said on behalf of the branch: “Following on from the hugely successful Unite-sponsored Champion’s Cup, a partnership between the IFA/FAI at senior level, we saw an opportunity to actively promote Unite’s three concepts of equality, diversity and community at a local grassroots level through supporting Maiden City Soccer’s excellent youth programmes.

“At a national level, Unite has ring-fenced EUR 25,000 for community-based projects through the inaugural Champion’s Cup so to further develop this ethos locally, we were very glad to support and enhance opportunities for an aspirational, cross-community organisation such as Maiden City Soccer.

“Local communities and clubs need assistance now more than ever to deliver effective frameworks and the Unite DuPont/Lycra Branch are pleased to provide financial funding, additionally promoting the equality and diversity agendas.”
