Mayor Tierney asked all primary school children across the council area to draw their own version of an Easter bonnet, with all participants receiving an Easter treat. The Mayor and the Easter bunny this week visited some of the schools who took part to hand deliver their treats.

The Mayor and his two younger children, Mary-Kate and Ben, then went through all of the entries and picked eight winners who will receive special prizes from the Mayor himself and have their artwork displayed in the Mayor’s Parlour in the Guildhall.

Mayor Tierney said he was blown away by the talent of all of the boys and girls who entered the competition.

“I can honestly say I was completely amazed at the creativity, colour and the talent on show for each and every one of the entries that I received.

“Picking just a few winners out of over 1,300 entries was an almost impossible task. Every single one of them could have won, so I just want to say a massive thank you to all of the boys and girls who took part.

“They should all be really proud of their work and I was certainly very proud looking through each one alongside my children Mary-Kate and Ben and my wife Cheryl.

“Congratulations to our winners Clara, Erin, Reece, Claragh, Hannah, Hallie, Anna Rose and Zara, and a big well done to all the children involved. I hope they have a great Easter break and eats lots and lots of chocolate!”

The winners of the Primary 1 to Primary 3 category were 1st – Clara Maxwell (Holy Child Nursery), 2nd – Erin McGinley (Long Tower PS) and 3rd - Reece Herron (Rosemount PS).

The winners of the Primary 4 to Primary 7 category were 1st – Claragh McIvor (St Oliver Plunkett PS), 2nd – Hannah Browse (St Brigid’s PS, Carnhill) and 3rd – Hailie McAdams (St Patrick’s PS).

Anna Rose Griffen (St Patrick’s PS) and Zara Hannon (Strabane Controlled PS) also received prizes for their handmade Easter bonnets.
