Groarty P.S. closure decisionis imminent, says Peter Weir

Education Minister Peter Weir has said a decision on the closure of Groarty Integrated Primary School is imminent.

He was asked by Foyle MLA Mark H. Durkan about a proposal to discontinue the school with from August 31, 2020.

“Development Proposal 586 for the proposed closure of Groarty Controlled Integrated Primary School is under consideration by my officials and I expect to make a decision in the coming weeks,” said Mr. Weir.

Mr. Durkan said: “Groarty Primary School is one of only two integrated primary schools in Derry; the only one situated on the West Bank of the Foyle. As such, the school is uniquely placed to offer a positive, inclusive ethos of tolerance towards all sections of the community.

“It has served the needs of the local community for over 150 years. Their proposed closure not only threatens integrated education provision in the area, but the city also.”
