People urged to support Magee Health Science Hub

The people of the north west have been urged to promote Magee as a major centre for health studies ahead of a move that could see 500 additional student places allocated for Derry.

The call was made by SDLP MLA for Foyle Sinead McLaughlin in response to the re-launch of a consultation by Ulster University on the relocation of health and life sciences courses that are currently based at the Jordanstown campus.

Sinéad McLaughlin said: “Derry can become a major centre for the expanding health and health sciences sectors. For this to happen, we need skills and investment.

“The relocation of Ulster University’s health and life sciences courses from the Jordanstown campus to Magee would be central to this. And it would make perfect sense following the approval of the Magee Medical School to open next year. In fact, not approving the transfer of these courses to Magee now would be bizarre.”

“I urge the public of Derry to respond to the consultation, explaining the relocation of the health and life sciences courses is important not just to improve the provision of health services in the north west, but also to strengthen our emerging and expanding health economy. The online link for consultation responses is www.ulster.ac.uk/consultations.”
